Good News for the AJC: the Senate Blocks Bill C-377 and Brings Positive Amendments

With the start of summer, and on the eve of Canada Day, there has been a bit of good news on the bill C-377 front.

The Conservative-dominated Senate has just blocked the union disclosure bill and has voted to amend it considerably.

Many of these amendments will be to the advantage of the AJC. The amendments will raise the reporting threshold for payments to $150,000 from $5,000. The reporting threshold for salaries is raised to $444,661 from $100,000.

Most importantly for the AJC, the amendments also exempt unions with fewer than 50,000 members. That's us!

Changes to the bill were spearheaded by Conservative Senator Hugh Segal. The Senate voted 49-33 on June 25, 2013, to support changes to bill C-377.

This is a great example of what we can achieve when we join forces. The collective and individual efforts of the public service unions were instrumental in rallying against this universally-panned legislation. As like many other unions, the AJC wrote to senators expressing our concerns with this legislation.
