AJC's Policy Grievance on Pay Increments for Federal Lawyers on Maternity or Parental Leave Scheduled for Hearings on September 2, 2014.

Since May 10th, 2013, federal lawyers' rates of pay are governed by a lockstep system comprised of 'increments.'

On January 31, 2014, the AJC reported on its policy grievance relating to federal lawyers on maternity or parental leave without pay who are now on a lockstep pay system since May 10th, 2013.

Prior to May 10th, 2013, federal lawyers on maternity or parental leave found their performance pay prorated in accordance with the length of time actually worked during the year where such an evaluation could be performed.

Since May 10th, 2013, federal lawyers' rates of pay are governed by a lockstep system comprised of 'increments.'

It is the AJC's view that federal lawyers on maternity and parental leave should be entitled to a pay increment, as established in the (Association of Justice Counsel  v. Treasury Board), unless they receive an 'unsatisfactory' evaluation.

The AJC is therefore seeking among other things, pay adjustments for all federal lawyers who were on maternity or parental leave and who meet the eligibility requirements for the May 10th, 2013 incremental increase.

This policy grievance is one of many policy grievances that the AJC has referred to adjudication before the Public Service Labour Relations Board in order to protect our members' interests. This matter is scheduled for hearing on September 2, 2014.
