New LP Classification: The Conversion from LA to LP is in Name Only and Your Actual LP Classification Should not Result in a Salary Scale Change

The new classification conversion to LP is not a notice of a work description change.

Some AJC members still have questions and are worried that somehow their positions have been downgraded or their salary scales affected as a result of the Treasury Board's classification review initiative.

The AJC wants to reassure members that this classification conversion is in name only. The new classification conversion to LP is not a notice of a work description change.

Below please find a table of concordance between the old LA classification levels and the new LP classification levels that we have also reproduced in our online FAQ.

- LA Devs are now referred to as LP-0.
- LA-1s are now LP-1.
- LA-2As are now LP-2.
- LA-2Bs are now LP-3.
- LA-3As are now LP-4.
- LA-3Bs are now LP-5.

For more information about the new classification standard that came into effect on January 6, 2014, please visit Treasury Board's site by clicking here.

Many lawyers have been or will be provided with an Official Personal Notification (OPN) letter informing them of the new group and level of their position, and of their classification grievance rights.  To the extent you recently received a revised job description to align with the new standard, you should not expect a new job description.

LPs looking for a copy of their job description should consult the one previously provided within the last 12 months or ask their supervisor for a copy, if they are unable to locate it.

Please refer to the following links of prior communiques regarding the classification review initiative: this announcement from August 2011, the FAQs, and the Classification and Job Description Tool Kit.
