Law Group - New LP Classification Comes Into Effect in January 2014

The AJC does not anticipate that anyone's level will be adversely impacted by this new classification.

As 2013 draws to a close, the AJC would like to remind you that the new Law Practitioner (LP) classification standard comes into effect on January 6, 2014. Treasury Board recently approved the final classification.

As a result, employees will be provided with an Official Personal Notification (OPN) letter informing them of the new group and level of their position, and of their classification grievance rights. Please expect the letters to be delivered in the first week of January.

Work on this new classification started in 2007, when TB announced the LA Classification Reform Project. The current Classification Standard dated back to 1987.

The AJC has been consulted throughout this process, starting in April 2010. Since then, TB and the AJC met on a few occasions to discuss version 6 of the draft standard.

The major changes made to work descriptions include the following:

- Increased focus on the following aspects of work as practitioner: critical thinking & analysis, knowledge, leadership, physical & sensory effort and work environment as these elements make up the new LP Classification Standard;
- Legal Advisory and Litigation streams combined under one generic work description; and
- Updated format to reflect the requirements outlined in the TBS Guidelines on Work Description Writing.

As stipulated in your collective agreement, you are entitled to grieve the content of your work description within 25 working days.

The AJC does not anticipate that anyone's level will be adversely impacted by this new classification.

We invite you to consult the Classification and Job Description FAQs by clicking here.
You will also find a recap of what led to the adoption of the new LP classification.
