Law Group - New Classification Code

AJC in Discussions with the Canadian Human Rights Commission and the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada on the New Job Descriptions

New Classification for Law Group:

The Office of the Chief Human Resources Officer (OCHRO) of the Treasury Board Secretariat (TBS) has developed a new classification group and classification standard for the Law Group.

Under the new classification system, LA positions will soon be classified as Law Practitioners (LP) across five levels of work (LP-01, LP-02, LP-03, LP-04 and LP-05).

New Job Descriptions for CHRC and IRBC:

Further, the AJC is presently consulting with the Canadian Human Rights Commission and the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (CHRC) and the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRB) on the review and update their LA-01 and LA-02 work descriptions in anticipation of the new LP classification standard, which is expected to come into effect on January 6, 2014.

The major changes made to work descriptions include the following:

- Increased focus on the following aspects of work as counsel: critical thinking & analysis, knowledge, leadership, physical & sensory effort and work environment as these elements make up the new LP Classification Standard;
- Legal Advisory and Litigation streams combined under one generic work description; and
- Updated format to reflect the requirements outlined in the TBS Guidelines on Work Description Writing.

The AJC has already provided comments to the IRB. AJC members at CHRC can provide comments by end of day, Thursday November 28, 2013. As stipulated in your collective agreement, you are entitled to grieve the content of your work description within 25 working days.

We also invite AJC members to read the FAQs on job descriptions and classifications posted on our website by clicking here.
